Committee of International Affairs, Korean Medical Association: International affairs of the Korean Medical Association: achievements and future challenges

Abstract

The Korean Medical Association (KMA) has made great strides in international affairs since it joined the World Medical Association (WMA) in 1949. Joining the Confederation of Medical Associations in Asia and Oceania (CMAAO) followed in 1956 and activities in these international organizations have built a foundation for growth. After long years of experience and capacity building in these organizations, the KMA successfully hosted the WMA General Assembly in Seoul in 2008, marking the pinnacle of its international achievements. Today, the KMA plays a key role in the world health arena by serving as a council member in the WMA and as council chair in the CMAAO. KMA continues to expand its spectrum of international contribution and collaboration including close ties with medical associations and non-governmental organizations around the world. International exchanges and collaboration form an effective channel to keep up-to-date on trends and changes worldwide and to find clues for addressing local issues. Sharing values with similar organizations around the world will give us solid ground to stick to our mission of serving for human health and happiness. For further growth in international influence and capacity, the KMA needs to take multifaceted and strategic approaches in both multilateral exchanges within the framework of international organizations and bilateral exchanges with national medical associations. This article reviews the achievements and challenges of KMA's international affairs and shares thoughts on its future directions.
