Yoo: Development of Radiology in Korea during Japanese Colonial Period

Abstract

After discovery of X-ray in 1895 by the Röntgen, the first X-ray equipment for medical use in Korea was installed at the Chosun Soutokufu Hospital in 1911. However the exact manufacturer or function of the equipment was not described. In 1913, Wappler X-ray equipment made in America was installed at the Severance Hospital which was operated by a surgeon named Mun-Jip Kang. Motoharu Suzuki was a Japanese doctor who had developed the radiology in Korea from 1922 to 1945. In 1934, he established the Chosun Röntgen Society. A number of articles on therapy and diagnosis have been reported mainly by Japanese doctors. The main topics were the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis and barium of esophagus and stomach. Bu Hyun Lee, the first Korean radiologist who was trained by Suzuki from 1934 to 1937, published a radiology article in 1935 and organized the Korean Radiological Society in 1945.
